And Another Batch Leaves MCKK

Today should be the final day for Class of 2010, the last SPM paper was yesterday (if I am not mistaken).

They will walk (or had walked) the gates for the last time, looked back and cried (well, some of them. Most of us did cry like hell when it was our turn almost 16 years ago). I didn't know why we cried so badly the last time.

Perhaps the realisation that we would not meet each other for a very long time (that was proven wrong. We see each other all the time, except one or two who had gone into M-I-A status. But our lives revolve around our batch - something of a bliss and nightmare to the wives. Bliss because at least they know the company the husbands are with. Nightmare because these damn husbands just refuse to grow up, ha ha).

Perhaps because we were very sad to leave the school (ha ha I think even this one was proven wrong. It wouldn't be long before each batch that leaves the school forgets the promises they made about going back and making the school proud. We all get sucked up into the rat race).

Perhaps because we had to say good-bye to the special someone (yeah, but you did this way much earlier before SPM started and the juniors left. And the concept of "betik" was too clandestine and considered an aberration back then to have manifested itself so publicly on the last day we left the school).

So why did we cry?

I don't know, I guess we were just boys.

I truly missed MCKK and the batchmates in the first year I left, although the missing part was ameliorated by a bunch of batchmates who went to the same school/UK with me for A-Levels. But it did take a while before I could get my focus on something else. Of course, once you get your eyes on something else, you never looked back.

I see the same thing with each batch that leaves MCKK in the last few years.

In the first few months, they cannot detach from MCKK. They'll find every excuse to be back. They'll commit to anything, even sleeping in surau just to be a part of an MCKK team (he he).

Then, they'll get on with their scholarship/college application and all will apparate (to use HP's lingo) in a second. They get sucked into the new thing so quickly and they will move on very quickly too.

Such is the inert nature of human beings. We resist change. Change will come at a heavy price and it will be resisted at all cost initially, because we fear the unknowns. We prefer the milieu we are familiar with.

But change will come nevertheless, it's a journey upon which this Earth has been ordained.

Observing a bunch of MCKK boys leaving the school year in and year out, I am convinced that even the boys in a remote school in Kuala Kangsar observes this rule.

To the boys of Class of 2010, just as I wished every batch before you - may you do justice to the heritage you carry. You owe it to the heritage to build upon it and bring new heights to everything we have stood for. Be the change you want the others to be, lest we forget what a folly it was to sing it from out heart each Monday morning! Good luck.

Selamat Kembali Hj Botchap, AJK Keselamatan Internet

Ha2 giler mahal and budak2 ni sayur, tapi apa nak buat kena lah berkorban (kononnya masa tu).

3) Lepas tu tak pernah bawak budak2 ni pergi USM Open, sebab kitorang rasa banyak lagi yg budak2 ni kena belajar as a team. Tapi sebenarnya, tujuan bawak pergi ke USM Open semua tu bukan nak suruh menang sangat, tapi sebab nak bagi diorang rapat as satu team, barulah nanti bila dah keluar koleq banyak cerita yang boleh dikongsi, banyak adventure. Macam tu baru yengko & baru speret koleq (he2).

7) Akhirnya budak2 ni duduk apartment kat Vistana (ha2 gler class pi main Pesta Hoki USM duduk Vistana, orang lain duduk kat masjid je ha2). Diorunk kumpul RM100 setiap sorunk utk bayar semua, so kira OK lah biar diorunk rasa penat lelah as a team, pakai duit sendiri untuk main hoki & tak de org dewasa yg nak supervise diorunk. Kitorunk boleh hulur sikit2 je lah nak tampung duit belanja mana yg patut.

8) 17 sampai 19 Disember ni (minggu depan), budak2 ni datang join tournament Uniten lak. Ha2 bersedialah korunk nak bagi diorunk jadi homeless kat rumah korunk.

9) Menang kalah belakang kira, yang penting budak2 ni dah pandai berdikari, ada usaha sendiri nak balik training (dulu kitorunk buat training masa cuti sorunk pun tak datang, sekarang dah balik sendiri sukarela). Ni yang kita panggul Yengko and UniteFect!

10) Budak2 ni lah jadi harapan kita supaya diorunk perturunkan speret koleq yang tak berbelah bagi ni kepada juniors dan Insya Allah dalam setahun dua lagi, bila dah jadi old boys, bolehlah sambungkan balik koleq coach budak2 hoki. Tak mahu dah game hockey sayur and luput sampai nak pupus sebab terbengkalai.

11) Kudos kepada Bapak2 Itik, walaupun kita dah tak de nak tengok budak2 ni jadi dewasa, tp mungkin sebab kita dah tarik diri lah diorunk dah belajar jadi dewasa :-)

Politik Dalam Mentulas

Brace yourself for this - I am not sure whether it's a sign of mid-life crisis and we are just too bored and too lazy to do anything more useful; or we have the penchant for turning anything serious to comical.

Mulanya begini:

Epit:

Tuan Prez, Kepala Budak & Fellow MI,

Semoga pemergian kami direstui!!!

Terima kasih.

(Nota: batch ni memang tersangat jarang pergi MCOBA Dinner ha2. Sapa-sapa yang pergi selalunya kena berhempas pulas justify yang dia tak mengkhianati semangat UniteFect!)

Chibiok:

semoga anda mendapat keberkatan dlm majlis tersebut

Ein:

adakah di s sponsor oleh XXX?

Epit:

Tidakkk!!!!!

Chibiok:

adakah budak2 batch XXX yg sponsor??

Epit:

(Epit dah panic. Saat ini jelas Epit cuba menyembunyikan sesuatu. The dagger is out ha ha)

Ezam:

Beliau cuma mewakili bapak2 budak yg lain bertanya. Tak salahkan?

Abu Usama:

Kepala budak tak mahu ada unsur2 rasuah, sbb tu dia tanya.

Epit:

Rough:

errr kita kena tahu sponsor sapa.

sbb kalau yg sponsornya XYXY, maksudnya epit & mpro telah menjadi trojan horse dlm MI.

ini cobaan memecahkan MI.

Abu Usama:

Konek depa berdua perlu di kasi!

Epit:

Rough:

sah2 trojan horse.

lepas ni dia akan buat komen persoalkan ketokohan Pres kita. Lepas tu dia persoalkan nama Mentula sbg lucah.

ini perancangan besar YYYYY nk pecah belahkan kita.

epit kata nak dedahkan pada masa yg sesuai, sama mcm zaid kata nak resign tp effective di masa depan.

corak trojan horse.

kah3.

ckp je la epit.

Ezam:

Kenapa menghukum.

Ada bukti ke Gadap?

Mana? Mana? Haha

Rough:

bab2 pegang & tekan konek, gadap x perlukan bukti. ada peluang, tangkap & ramas je ha3

Mattop:

abis epit kena pressure...

Epit:

aku ada masalah la pulak ni.

dinner tu sabtu ni, aku kat Sg Petani. aisehhhh...tapi sponsor kata hari Ahad 12/12...

Kak Ramlah:

Hmm... Tetiba kan, Pit. :-D.

(Eyh, I pun boleh buat cameo jugak tau..... )

Rough:

Berita terbaru diterima. Adakah ini benar epit?

Ein:

ahahaha... epit sudah tertekan!!!! ... err, gadap, cuba ramas telur dan konek anda sendiri. telur dan konek org lain jugak ko nak ramas. hahahah!

Rough:

aku rasa sah epit akan keluar batch. dia tngh call semua kawan2 baik dia untuk keluar batch, buat batch baru.

budak2 utagha, korang kena ingat epit telah abandon korang. so jgn cuba2 nak join batch baru epit.

yg kelakarnya, mpro yang sblum ni nak bersama2 epit, skrng dah diam. aku rasa dia akn pledge support kepada Mentula & Tuan Prez, maka keseorangan lah epit.

ha ha sapa sponsornya epit?

Auzir:

Ezam:

Epit ajak NS chapter sekali.

Aku akan tg pandangan akar umbi.

Auzir:

kalau epit betul2 setia sama batch..aku cadangkan dia buat open table nasi arab kat jalan ampang..

ada beranik?

Hucs Je:

aku nak join batch epit...nanti bila aku masuk utk timbalan pres, tak menang, aku akan suggest epit tinggalkan batch baru dia , bagi org lain memimpin....contohnya aku..

mcm pernah ku dgr konsep kurang ajar begini

Hucs Je:

cakap pasal nasi arab, baru2 ni epit suruh aku belanja nasi arab sbb mintak no tepon DR Khairel Rafezi.....adakah ini style batch 94 (baru) ? komisen tak setimpal dgn effort?

yeah..mari pressure epit!

Chibix:

Itu adalah petanda2 awal pemerintahan batch baru. Komisen adalah budaya tolong-menolong.

Auzir:

Chibix:

Kita tunggu PC dari epit tak lama lagi. Tuan Prez juga menyepi. Kenapa? Adakah ini budaya politik baru MI.

Abu Usama:

Terkini: epit sedang buat PC di Restoren Perantau Putrajaya sekarang. Lihat gambar ni!

Mattop:

muka tengah pressure ke tu?...

Syed Khalid aka Tuan Prez:

Tiada soal siapa yg pres, siapa yg timbalan head boy. Kita sepakat. Membawa berkat.

Chibiok:

Ni mcm pernah dgr je. Tup2 lepas tu tangkap pakai UTK dtg rumah. Then buat tuduhan. Hermmm.

Pandangan tuan prez amatlah dihargai. Kami yang ikhlas hanya menurut perintah tuan prez.

Chibiok:

terbaru ... Abu Usama akan bersekongkol dgn YB Epit ...

kita perlukan isu yg baru utk mengalihkan perhatian2 pihak luar dan media dlm hal ni ... mana gambar2 amoi2 simpanan tuan IR kita ..

Ein:

hmm.. epit takde hal. dia ada contact kat apco bole spin baekkkk punya. hahaha!

AKHIRNYA EPIT TAK TAHAN KENA PRESSURE DAN TUNDUK JUGA....

Epit:

Tuan-tuan,

Harap keadaan kembali pulih seperti biasa.

Sekian, terima kasih.

Ein:

epit terlalu tegang... boboe juga di carinya. adakah gadap tak layak utk mengendurkan ketegangan?...

Chibix:

terima kasih dgn penjelasan deputy kepala budak. tapi kenapa Afza pilih Nadzrie?????? sesungguhnya kita perlu mangambil iktibar dalam perkara2 begini ...

Abu Usama:

Aku sanggup jadi macam saifool! Liwatlah saya, nanti saya tak basuh xxxxx 2 hari dan dahi kasi lebam sikit supaya nampak lebai.

Chibix:

Afza, Nadzrie, Boboe dan Epit .... apakah ini?

Auzir:

Saya cadangkan saudara epit buat open table nasi arab di jalan ampang untuk menyelesaikan masalah ini once and for all.

Boboe:

2) Yang senyap2 akan lari when the goings get tough - Mpro

3) Kaki pukul dan kaki pressure - Chibix

4) Kaki pow cari peluang nak buat komisyen - Auzir

Musim Betik

Morrison's Academy: after breakfast on Sunday, the Brits went to church and we continued playing cards

On the way to London from Scotland: one of the Easter breaks (looking at the weather ha2). Please don't mind Fadli, he had just discovered Churchill's V-sign

Favourite past time during breaks: congregating at Jita's place at Earl's Court and cook. Cook and eat and sleep (I think we were doing kuih ketayap this time, Chamat mengidam)

The disastrous picnic at Ulu Kenas a week before SPM. Disastrous because while other candidates in other schools were panicking for SPM, we went for a picnic oblivious of the gravity of it. Unsurprisingly, we crashed baik punya in SPM ha2!

This is a season for betik.

At any particular time of our life, there would have been some people whom we are very close to. In MCKK, you tend to be close to different people (or groups) as you grow up. For example, I was close to Radin when we were in Form 2 because we hardly missed going to town together. It took us more than a decade to be close again, though by any standard (current MCKK standard) I can declare Radin as my betik with head high (ha ha).

But there are also people who are a constant in our life. They were there from the very beginning and somehow our path keep crossing. As you are tested in life, they were there all the time, unwavering in support and sympathy.

I am lucky because I picked up many of these people in my life since the first month I was in MCKK. There are those who had been close to me ever since that first few months and we had known each other so much that it only requires a flicker of glance to guess what annoys us; or what pleases us. These people know they are and I don't have claim them betiks too (ha2, that's blasphemous to the very concept of betik).

Surprisingly, I was never close to Jita in my five years in MCKK. Yes, we were in the same class in our final year. Yes, we were in the same English set since we were in Form 2. But we were never close and the only part that distinctively stands out is his buying the whole 5 Sc 1 Big Mac meals closer to SPM (ha ha).

But we ended in the same school for A-Levels, in one of the remotest places in Scotland. There was no train or bus stations, only bus stops to take you to the nearest train/bus stations. It's the equivalent of Karai, a small clusters of housing for pensioners (and a boarding school in the middle of it ha ha).

Getting stuck there was an impetus to look for something else to occupy ourselves, otherwise we would be dead. Jita found it in a girl friend. I found it in writing, so we continued the publication of Mindweb, a bulletin for Malaysian pre-university students destined for UK universities. Mindweb was started by Azraai Bahari Nasruddin, Scholar of the Year 1992. It was a way for us to keep connected and we distributed the bulletin to Malaysian A-Level colleges as well.

I have the habit of saying yes first, then figuring out the how later. There was one great obstacle in managing a publication when you get stuck in a place like Crieff, because none of us has a PC/laptop or printer. The school facilities were outdated (this was before the internet/PC age). A cikai PC used to cost about GBP1,500 if I am not mistaken; that's about RM9,000 by conversion.

Luckily Jita came to the rescue because he just had a laptop, as a birthday gift from his dad. It was a very thick and heavy Olivetti laptop (ha ha who would have bought an Olivetti laptop nowadays), but it was a state-of-the-art those days. I was ever grateful that he allowed me to use his expensive laptop almost 24/7 to produce a bulletin which he initially didn't have any interest in (ye la, dia dok pakai laptop mahal main Sollitaire!). He was also kind enough to buy a printer, so that I could print ha ha (what's the point of finishing everything when you cannot print!). Many times he would help me dealt with the local photocopy shops to get things printed (that was among my first lessons in economics ha ha, using the service of a small business without an economies of scale was stupid, it was twice more expensive to produce Mindweb in a little Scottish town than what Azraai had done, closer to London).

That was the start of a very long and fruitful friendship, centred on trust and loyalty. He played along when I dragged him into UKEC, taking the most sensitive post of Finance (because he could always top up if anything happens, kah3). His family apartment in Earl's Court became our official bed and breakfast, there were times some of us would bunk there for weeks (Chamat that is, my stay was always shorter he he).

In my darkest hours in the UK, I would run to him for distraction. We do not like to speak too much of what was personal to us, being boys means you would just want the company (and the free bed and breakfast ha ha) and skirt the obvious issues altogether.

During our time in PETRONAS, somehow our paths kept crossing as I dragged him from his comfortable life in Kerteh to the corporate centre. As I left PETRONAS and had to clear all of my life savings to pay back, he came to the rescue while waiting for me to make a new financial arrangements.

It has come one full circle and we came to a junction when we have to pursue the next phase of our life. I chose the unpredictable, the road less traveled as it is a calling.

Jita is leaving for a posting in Australia today, he's bringing his whole young family with him. A PETRONAS posting is usually 3-4 years long, but I do not discount that hearts may change and new doors may open, so it remains to be seen whether he will in fact come back after his posting.

I had wanted to organise a farewell dinner for him but had been busy, in the end due to miscommunication only Mattop who turned up for the cancelled dinner (ha2 reputasi yukengkaungongme aku lives on! Raja kincing). Well, Jita will be back soon, so will organise a proper one.

Over the last 5 years, all of my closest friends from the original UK clique had left the country. Fadli is never back in the country, the closest is Singapore. Chamat has been stationed in Beijing for quite a while. Fazurin had left for US since 2006 and is based there ever since. Madad never came back and I doubt that he will, now in Geneva.

And now Jita leaves the country too.

It's a sign of change. My heart feels heavy and I don't look forward to it, but we all have to move on in different directions in life.

May the bond that had held us all these last 2 decades will be there, so that when we meet next (or when we are in need of that honest companionship), it is not difficult to re-ignite.

Bon voyage Jita and good luck. You will make a great father and husband.

PS:

I guess I would have missed his flight. He sent a short SMS last night telling me that he banked in his zakat for me to pay in Terengganu. Also a zakat portion to go to MCKK. Very kind indeed.

Salam.

Ni report larian CICM Responsibility Run Bukit Jalil 2010 10KM.

Kehadiran KPTC kurang memberangsangkan.

Actual Distance: 10.61 km (Mengikut Garmin GPS)

Masa:

Jures - 54:14 m (Position: 101 / ?)

Syam - 1h:25m (Personal Best - 15 minit kurang daripada Mizuno Wave Run)

Kicap - Injured plantar fasciitis (terpaksa jalan sepanjang 3km).

Selamat Hari Lahir Kepada Radin Mastopo

Masa F1, Radin bedmate Joe, so duduk depan katil aku.

Ha2 bila ingat2 balik, rasa innocent sangat Radin jawab dia terasa jugak sebab orang dok buat joke pasal nama dia.

Masa F2, Radin selalu keluar town ngan aku sebab kitorang je yang suka makan kat Rahmaniah, orang lain suka makan kat Saudiah. Kira selalu keluar town sekali masa F2 - kalau zaman sekarang, dah boleh claim betik dah ha2 sebab aku rasa antara yang aku paling rapat masa F2.

Then F3, aku rasa Radin kat NH kot jadi puppies he2, so mula renggang sikit sebab kitorang kat West Wing kena bergelut ha2.

By F5, semua dah bawak diri masing-masing dengan segala masalah cinta masing (ehem2), so walaupun satu house (dia Dorm 19, atas dorm aku) tapi tak rapat sangat. By F5 pun, orang lagi habiskan masa dengan budak kelas.

Anyway Radin pi Australia, aku pi UK. So balik2 aku rasa pi wedding dia in 2003 - itu antara wedding terawal aku pi. Radin pakai baju hijau muda kot? Ha ha (kena cari album gambar ni).

Masa tu aku tersesat di meja satu kumpulan makcik-makcik yg stylo & sempat berborak/flirting lagi. Masa tu istilah cougar tak wujud lagi, kalau sekarang sah2 makcik2 tu dapat nickname Cougars.

Somehow Radin banyak tolong in everything yang aku buat these last few years, especially jadi resident designer untuk semua program and logo2 Mighty Ducks. Radin and wife pun tak pernah miss reunion.

So aku pikir2 balik, kira kalau kat koleq dulu ada ala2 betik, lama-lama mesti rapat balik gak kan?

Ha3.

Selamat Hari Lahir Radin, moga mas & keluarga sihat sejahtera dan diberkati Allah.

Ini gambar isteri Radin & anak dia :-)

ps: Tema betik kali ini sebab aku baru dapat tahu sorang budak koleq yang kitorang jaga all this while buat confession dia ada betik. Kah3. Aku tak tahu nak response, but I guess he needed to get it out his chest ha2.

Good Luck for SPM (and Life!)

I had planned to call Pojan and Shahir for quite a while, since by comparison they could have been the worst treated senior debaters in the last seven years. Things did not work too well with the establishment and more often than not, they stood their ground. In the process, many incidents that in my opinion were not fair happened and we were not there to back them up (or cheer them up, the way we used to). They cannot be blamed if they feel they were abandoned.

I made a decision at one point to risk severing the relationship that we had with the boys for the bigger picture. Along the way, many people paid the price and one of the groups most affected was these boys.

Usually before they go for their SPM, they would have received cards and postcards wishing them good luck. Their batch would have gone through a full weekend's worth of scholarship and career workshop - outlining the steps and possibilities they will encounter once they leave the school. In previous years, we even made occasional visits just to cheer the boys and distracted them from the pressure of SPM.

Pojan and Shahir did not get any of that, though they deserve every bit of it. Even the SMS became very occasional as we all move on in different directions.

Overwhelmed by a sense of guilt (and the need to retain some portion of the past as we move forward in life), I made a call to both of them last night (ha ha partly to entertain me in the massive balik kampung jam).

So much has changed. The school has changed. The few people who were instrumental in the collage of memories for the last 7 years would have moved on too.

Most importantly, Pojan and Shahir will move on too.

But there was an air of optimism about everything.

There were a few good news from MCKK. The boys seemed to be a lot more at ease with the new openness and hassle-free approach (and I hope the information and updates I receive have been accurate). The Form 3 batch managed to get a 3rd rank in the whole SBP based on their PMR-trial; so hopefully we'll hear some good news by the year end. The Form Five was ranked 12th (according to them) based on the SBP trial, also the best so far (the best result since 2004, if I can recall, was 2006's at 18th). I just hope they don't screw up the way we did when the trial results were very encouraging (somehow MCKK boys have the tendency).

The rest of the chats were about them (for once). Shahir wants to do economics and all geared for it. Pojan will be taking the accounting route and will end up in the UK (that's his plan). With both planning to be in the UK, the debaters family will have quite a gathering in 2-3 years down the line (note: their career decision has got nothing to do with me or others ha ha, though of late we only produced one engineer and two doctors, the rest are all economists, accountants or lawyers ha2).

Anyway I wish them (and Class of 2010) good luck.

You will have an opportunity to finally fly away and choose the path of your life, as you like it. Choose carefully and responsibly as there are cause and effects for everything we do in life. Make us proud and come back as responsible citizens who know where our place in the society is.

Our time is up and by now we can only watch from afar.

But there's a thing called telephone :-), so always pick it up when you need to revisit the past.

Leftovers of Mighty Ducks: Deepavali With Coach

Mighty Ducks feel a memory of the distant past, though the last Mighty Ducks' game that we cheered for was only in July.

But the last few weeks had been able to rekindle whatever we left behind with Mighty Ducks. Last weekend, some Bapak Itiks decided to go for seafood dinner in Umbai, Melaka. I happened to be travelling from the south so managed to drop by to join the crowd. I know that the real intention was to escape the wives (ha ha) since none of them came with the wife, but it was a good time spent catching up after the patchy few months of Mighty Ducks.

The boys seem to be doing quite well too. The school, under the new HM gives a lot more attention and unlike the last few years, the boys had managed to enroll into a few tournaments themselves. They lost a penalty flick (again) to SERATAS at UPSI Open a few weeks back at quarter final and they'll be joining the USM International Open in December. This is the first time they rejoin the tournament since we first brought them in 2007.

I stumbled a collection of photos of the boys visiting Mr Pala for Deepavali. I had always dreamed of the time when openness will be part of MCKK culture again - I guess it's slowly becoming a reality.

It's about time to find time to pay a visit to Mr Pala, he's the only one left from the Mighty Ducks crowd!

It Comes One Full Circle

The United Kingdom Executive Council for Malaysian Students (UKEC) was a union of Malaysian students societies in universities throughout the UK. I can't remember the current number of memberships, but at its height it counted 44 societies from 44 universities in the UK as members, roughly representing 10,000 students.

UKEC is sentimental to me personally because it was the work (and brain child) of (among others) the late Adlan Benan Omar (Class of 90). Together with other pioneers (including Harmiadi Don Rahim, also Class of 90), UKEC was formed in its nascent form in 1993.

I remember the summer of 1994 when Ben was back in Malaysia and we had a long chat about my plan after school. By that time, I already secured an Esso scholarship to US to become a geologist (ha ha nasib baik!) and my mind was already tuned towards that. A weekend with Ben, somehow we made a promise to each other that I would end up in the UK somehow and UKEC played a central role in it - because the plan was to bring me directly into UKEC.

The rest, as they say, is history.

The first 7 chairmen of UKEC were all budak koleq, so much so that at one point it was used against UKEC (some quarters alleged it as an MCKK old boy network ha ha):

1st: Adlan Benan Omar (Class of 90)
2nd: Eqhwan Mokhzanee Mohamad (Class of 92)
3rd: Harmiadi Don Rahim (Class of 90)
4th: Hilmi Yusof (Class of 92)
5th: Rafizi Ramli - 2 terms (Class of 94)
6th: Azri Nache - 2 terms (Class of 95)

The chain was broken in 2001, when the chairmanship was finally passed to a non-MCKK. It went through its low moments (as any organisation should be) before picking up again to reach its height from the mid 2005 onwards.

I had asked a few people from Class of 2005 to consider running for UKEC as they settled down in the UK, but I suppose life took a different turn for most of them.

In the end, perhaps realising that it would have meant a lot to the late Adlan Benan that finally another MCKK  old boy takes the helm of UKEC - Sdr Farquar Haqqani (Class of 2006) had been working his way up the UKEC ladder for the last 2 years.

Alhamdulillah, last weekend he defeated 2 other candidates to be elected as the next UKEC chairman - a small matter to most but most sentimental to some of us.

Hopefully it's a sign of many things to come, from the Classes of 2007 onwards who will be in the UK :-)

Good luck Haqqa, this is a way of saying congratulations for all the trials and tribulations thus far.

Qadha: Perutusan Aidilfitri oleh Tuan Presiden Mentula Ingens

Sungguh yengko perutusan ini, aku terlepas pandang ha ha. Selamba pakai semua video yang aku upload dulu, then combine dengan voice over ha ha ha.

Text penuh:

"Assalamualaikum warahmatullah hiwabarakatuh.

Alhamdulillah.

Assalamualaikum. Selamat Hari Raya."

Tuan Syed Khalid Al-Juned, Presiden Mentula Ingens yang yengko

College Round Up August 2010

With the end of the Mighty Ducks Project, there would not be too many reasons to go back to MCKK. The project ended poignantly, especially knowing that Mr Thaman would be leaving Malaysia for good for a voluntary work at a children's hospital in India.

He wrote a long letter expressing his feeling since joining us in the project. Initially I thought I wanted to publish the letter here, but it's personal and in the spirit of letting the bygones be bygones, I decided to keep it private. Suffice to say that he was sad and I felt bad to have dragged him into all this, late into his retirement.

So Badut and I made a last trip for Mighty Ducks to say goodbye to him in August. We spent a couple of hours chatting - mostly about how this and that boy had grown up, or reminiscing the early days. There is nothing that we can do that can pay his and Mr Pala's kindness, but I take comfort that things will be better for MCKK hockey after this even when we are not around.

To one of the greatest and most dedicated teachers who passed through MCKK gates - thank you very much Mr Thaman, you taught us more than just hockey. You taught us tolerance, discipline, kindness and hard work.

The boys may not appreciate these values now because they had been under a different regime for a very long time, but one day they will look back and thank you, as much as we are grateful to you now. May you find peace in your work in India and we pray that we will meet again.

Badut & Mr Thaman

We also took time to tour MCKK ground (perhaps for the last time, for a very long time).

Things are changing, we notice the old surau is being modified. From the look of it, it may become a cafeteria, so after all these years koleq boys will benefit from a properly built cafeteria (though I still prefer the kapet yang berupa garaj bas). Maybe there will be a new generation of Makcik Kapet and Noni Kapet!

The new IB buildings at the back of the old surau are also taking shape fast. I cannot comment on anything (ha ha), nanti ada orang terasa kah kah kah, but it's good to see some progress on the ground.

Our time with MCKK is over, as we go along there will be less and less updates like this.

We can now only offer prayers, hopefully we'll make MCKK proud in different ways now that our time on the ground is over.

Modification taking place, it looks as if there'll be a food counter?

Qadha: Siri Mentula/Yengko Menakluki Dunia

Siri Yengko/Mentula Menakluki Dunia berterusan walaupun Noni bercuti seketika:

HucsJe pun sedang menakluki dunia di Oslo (I think) tapi tak de pulak gambar dia. Errr HucsJe, mana gambar kau beraya rumah aku this year?

There And Back Again

It must have been ages.

The last posting was at the start of Ramadhan and as was with all the other things in the last one and a half month, the target for ucapan raya Warta KPKM missed by a mile.

I always said that life is what happens to you while you are busy planning other things (well, not my original quotation, I was so touched watching Mr Holland's Opus and the theme featured prominently in the movie. In fact some of us must have fancied ourselves as Mr Holland throughout those years doing The Mighty Ducks Project - Note 1) .

I digress, this is what happens when you stop writing for a while.

Anyway, life took a very different turn in mid-August. I tried my best to plan for things around me, but sometimes certain things cannot be anticipated at all. Many people asked why I decided to go for it, especially knowing my tendency to shy away from amanah, because once you give your words to carry it you have to climb a mountain to do justice to the amanah so entrusted on you.

I blame 99% of the decision on MCKK.

There's a notion called duty that MCKK is so good at inculcating in us. We grew up with this heavy notion on our shoulders, that it is our duty to do what is asked of us, or what is right when no one else was around to do it, no matter what our personal feelings are. It's the notion of duty that makes some prefects in Kuala Kangsar become monstrous, it is also the same notion that made us braved the night to deliver the best Speech Day's exhibition ever (well, plus the chance to spend time with the juniors, NGA TA etc., but that's just a side dish).

So some of us ended up in what can only be best described by Frodo's foolish offer to carry the ring to the mountain:

"I'll do it, though I do not know the way"

In all probability, he would be killed in the enterprise and it was a mission destined for disaster. Yet while hardship and pain awaits at each junction, there are times when the fate of the many is decided by the smallest and most unexpected, for life is also about the pureness of heart and intention, not always about the strength and might.

With that naive hope, so I embarked on the next adventure. I am pretty sure that the wounds will be great and it takes time to recover, but as long as it is not a mortal wound, I am reminded of Fazurin's nonchalant speech to the debaters in 2006 that what does not kill us will make us stronger.

As much as MCKK values compelled us to make erratic and unexpected decisions that others may shirk away from (given the circumstances), MCKK world also provided the most comfort in the lonely journey. I am grateful that I am surrounded and assisted by the ablest and most dedicated juniors, whose commitment breaks my heart knowing that they have to carry part of the burden unwittingly due to the association with me.  The batchmates who rally the support - either financial or material beings - remind me of why no matter how far we choose to travel, no matter how big is our adventure; our roots are here and we shall always be back here.

The blip in the last one month is a glimpse of what may yet to come. This is my burden and there is no other way, I have always known that the last 6 years would not last forever. I am glad that we made the best out of the time, to recreate friendships, to fill the void of growing old with a modicum of laughter and memories. One day we will fall back to those crucial 6 years as the period that binds us as strong as the 5 fulfilling years in MCKK had been - so that whatever or wherever we choose to traverse this Earth, we will not lose way with each other.

Certainly there will be adjustments. At the beginning, there was even option that the blog had to be restarted from scratch, but we have hundreds of postings here that are too valuable to confine to the bin of archives. So this will stay and Noni Kapet will be around for many years to come - somehow we'll manage and it'll be more fun to keep everyone guessing on which Noni doing which post.

So as the title suggests - I will be away for a while but I will always be here, because my heart is here. Those who keep coming back to check for an update, please do come back. It's only a short while before I complete the journey and be back again.

Welcome back everyone, sorry to have scared you.

NOTE 1
Mr Holland has got nothing to do with trying to be Holland's big brother, ha ha ha.

Ucapan Raya Ala Warta 2010

As we greeted Ramadhan, it is customary to repeat the silliness of Ucapan Raya Ala Warta for 2010. I have in my possession the special editions of Warta KPKM for 1992 - 1994 (courtesy of Q Class of 95) which I will scan to show how silly it was back then; and how even sillier it can be at this age.

The target this year is 500 ucapan! Last year we hit 327 :-)

I don't have time yet to scan and edit a few photos/old Warta, so for the time being you have to put up with recycled clips. I will do a new one by Aidilfitri this year (hoi Noni mintak raise la macam ni, banyak kerja laa).

Selamat Beribadat Sepanjang Ramadhan & beyond
dari Class of 94

Ha ha KNO pressure straight edit gambar!

Markah Terbaru Sukanterer Inter-House

Waaaah pressure betul jadi tukang update blog batch ni.

Futsal Padu & Spender Koyak Tahap Kronik

FROM PRESIDENT'S DESK

Ditemuramah selepas permainan "Aku nervous sebab James nak jumpa aku lepas game".

Akhirnya, bala batch kita bermain spirit of the coin telah datang dalam bentuk balingan coin yang telah menentukan kekalahan. Oleh kerana tendangan penalti kedua penjaga gol diselamatkan, kemenangan ditentukan oleh toss coin.

Walaupun penat, kami semua gembira.

Friends forever...

p.s: Saya main dua dua team. "Sbb I am the president"

NOTA KAKI SEBENAR
Grammar, punctuation dll oleh Presiden Yengkoz Mentula Inges memang hopeless, nasib baik hokdok membanggakan.

Peraturan Tetap Mendapatkan Markah Untuk Rumah

Setelah dilemparkan pelbagai tuduhan mengenai kredibiliti dan ketelusan, Epit yang merasakan dia disamakan dengan SPR (ha ha dia memang ada cita-cita nak jadi pengerusi SPR, lagipun dia memang cuba tackle anak Pengerusi SPR sekarang masa di koleq) mengisytiharkan peraturan tetap pemarkahan agar jelas bagi semua:

"Fellow Mentula Ingens,

izin aku clarify sikit mengenai mcm mana nak earn points.

Just after CCD, and before MM, a listing of Batch Names were discussed and debated; actually, it still is at Discussion page at http://www.facebook.com/mcoba Subsequently, this was what the ICT Committee had compiled and duly uploaded to one of our E Group.

---------------------------------------

"amacam, sapa nak update kat MCOBA?... hahaha 9296 pun sama?..
bagi aku, kuda or burung.... i think i like Yengkoz better... or better still "Not Enuff Teaching"..."

"Big Dick Yengkos!"

"YengkozUnaitfekt??"

"Ir Gadap = BiggezDixYengkoz"

"camne batch ni masuk koleq ?
7882 Crotalus Siamang/Koteless"

"ni eunuch ni, mcm laksamana Cheng Ho.."

"r*fizi batang berjuntai"

"ala yengkoz wuz ere dah le"

"berjuntai bunyi macam lembik.... batang menegak laa"

"apa2 nama yg membayangkan konek aku besar, aku setuju :-)"

"aku rasa cadangan kau tidak dipersetujui.
aku rasa btach kita kena ada nama yg berkaitan dgn yengko + konek, let me google what's latin for konek!"

"ha ha ha aku dah dapat:
aku cadangkan nama batch kita:
MENTULA INGENS
meaning Big Dick in Latin!"

"i thot penis is latin?"

"mengikut research aku, penis is an english word derived from a latin word meaning tail.
But Mentula is a latin word specifically for penis. ha ha"

"YENGKOZ letak kat depan"

"Klau jepun konek=chinchin"

"YengKonekDaiyo!"

"kena konek besar...konek kecik tak main la...."

"Yengkoz Mentula Ingens. Satu undi drp aku"

"Mat Top batch Ketiak Licin aka DeArmpit Le Bald."

"Versi Arab - I'SHOBAH DZAKARUN KABIRUN maksudnya Yengko Konek Besar."

"Ahhh lega betul mentula ingens aku selepas baru sekejap menjalankan tanggujawab malam jumaat...steady aku!"

"kau dah masukkan 3gp kau ke ... yg tunjukkan kau punya mentual tu power sgt ...."

"Bukan mentual. mentula"

Maka dari situ bermulalah trend baru memberi ucapan/memulakan hari2 seperti:

I'SHOBAH DZAKARUN KABIRUN

Ooi Guan Kok pasti bangga!

The Mighty Ducks Project: Tribute

Dedicated to the Bapak Itiks, coaches and all who have helped throughout the last four years, especially from the Class of 94

Finally we come to this. It’s a lot to write for the last few days when I am not in the best of health, but we have been yearning for this closure for a long time so we should get over and done with it. As always, I planned a while back what to write but with only Kristi sleeping by the laptop and a hungry stomach, I have forgotten everything.

The natural place to start is to thank all of you for agreeing to be a part of this journey. The lesson that you should learn is to be careful before you agree anything with me, because it’s always more than meets the eye (ha ha). To be fair to me, I didn’t expect that we would be drawn so much into it that it consumed us the way it did. By the end of 2008, it has become so personal and intertwined with us that extricating ourselves from this venture would not have been easy.

The first part of the journey was so melodious and happy that I wish it stayed that way throughout, before we started to encounter dead walls all around us. However, with a benefit of hindsight, it was the dead wall that tested our friendship and understanding of each other – though it was not always happy and easy, we stayed true to the reason why we agreed to this on that fateful night at Pelita in 2007.

So what was the reason?

My reason was simple – to keep company with each other and we needed a reason for us to come together. I have this complex in my mind that everything happens for a reason and I over-read in everything that happens around me. Each of us has a specific purpose and role to play – in all of us, I see very special roles that we will have to play for each other in the future, so keeping the bond intact was important.

Hockey in MCKK was a convenient cause. We couldn’t touch rugby because it is sacred to some others; football was not as neglected as hockey. As I travelled to and fro Kuala Kangsar in between 2004 and 2006, I realised the hockey boys came down on their own without any adults. The attendance was poor, but some of them persevered. That must have counted for something.

And I was fairly proud of our hockey team because you guys were close and continued to play for MCOBA. The arrangement was convenient (and fated) because among us, we had the expertise to help a team so abandoned in MCKK. It was most convenient for me because in all sincerity, I needed the company more than the longing to see MCKK excels in hockey again (ha ha).

Of course, true to our culture, we predicted correctly that the school wouldn’t have agreed to our assistance without any big names. Our culture suppresses the talents and contributions of the smaller people; there is an obvious bias for establishment and power. The decision to include Thorsten was perhaps the best decision we had made throughout the project.

I had enjoyed every moment of the Mighty Ducks years although occasionally we went through arguments, but then I am notorious for tantrums and mood swing (which is not a new thing as you guys have known me for the last 20 years). The early years were the best, as we were full of ideas and determination to see this through. Looking back, obviously a thick fitness instruction sent all the way from Beijing, for the boys to follow was a bit too ambitious. We forgot that it required the boys to have self-discipline; which obviously remains a key issue till the end.

Or who can forget the first Mighty Ducks Cup that we organised in Manjung? We were asked to cancel last minute and on the day itself, we found out there was a double booking before the boys arrived from KK. The list of dramas from Mighty Ducks years can fill up an entire book!

But what is most precious is when it was all over we would regroup and had a blast. The customary big dinner full of jokes and fun time after each big event would go down as the best part of the Mighty Ducks experience.

I can go on and on recalling every single moment but we will bore others to death. It’s very difficult to understand how much it means to us unless you go through it yourself. I went through the photos and videos over the years (and in between us we have thousands of photos and hundreds of videos) – just as much as the eagerness in the eyes of the boys was genuine, the happiness on our faces was equally priceless.

It’s precisely because those moments are priceless to us that I feel we should keep it where it belongs – privately in our hearts. As we grow older, may we look back at those moments as one of the best moments growing old; in the same way that we cherish the MCKK years as one of the best moments growing up.

At the stadium last week, I did have tears in my eyes – not because the boys lost, because we were at the end of the road. We were at the end of a journey that was so perfect in every sense and frankly I don’t know whether we can find the time (or have the patience and energy) to walk down a similar road in the future (the optimistic part of me keeps saying “we may yet Mr Frodo, we may” but we all know it is not going to be easy).

So what did we achieve?

The most certain part is we did not win Perak championship (if there is one) as carelessly set as the final target by KNO at the beginning. We didn’t even beat Clifford ha ha (though we did narrow the gap and each year the Clifford boys must have admired the fighting spirit of the MCKK boys). We did come close to the national final for SBP twice (losing by penalty flick in 2007 and losing by one goal in 2010 in the equivalent of semi-final) but that is nothing to shout about.

So did we fail?

Depends.

We definitely failed in the winning department, but we won their hearts big time. The ability to touch someone’s life, to have an impact on his memory for a very long time, to inspire someone to go beyond what he thinks he was capable – is an achievement far bigger than any cups in any tournaments. And we did this constantly each year with each batch as we extend our hands and hearts to them.

When they lost, the teary eyes betrayed their sadness for letting us down; more than for the loss itself. Each year or after each of our visit, the SMS sums up their feeling and warmth for having us around. The capacity to bring the best out of a quiet boy and turn him into a cheerful person who returns the trust back to us; is a victory that cannot be exchanged with any goals.

So when we look back to our years in Mighty Ducks, I hope we all see the smiling faces of these boys – not the heartbreaks we went through trying to stay on course when everything was stacked against us. Not only we had to contend with limited resources, we had personalities in and out of the school trying to bring the whole project down in any ways they could.

Hopefully, one day these smiling faces will reflect and return our kindness to the next generation. May they find rooms in their heart and small pocket to extend assistance to those after them, because throughout all this we taught them that life in service of others is the only life worth living.

But perhaps the biggest achievement of Mighty Ducks was never a target to begin with. Our painful experience observing and going through the troubles on the ground of MCKK convinced us of what needed to be done for the sake of Malay College. When the trumpet was sounded and the battle line drawn, it took its toll and dragged everyone that was ever connected with Mighty Ducks into it. It did not occur to me that it would take that long to accomplish (therefore I under-estimated the pain it would eventually inflict on all of us), but in the end the outcome was the best for MCKK. We may not win any tournament, but we won the bigger battle that was more critical for the well-being of MCKK in the long run. If we had not been so close to the ground, we wouldn't have witnessed the continuous damage being done to the school and we wouldn't have had the conviction to push through what had to be pushed through.

As we withdraw into our small existence, don’t despair that all was in vain, because Allah in all His greatness rewards what is due. I used to tell this to everyone and I still believe this – the kindness that we invest in other people’s children, Allah will return in other people’s investment in ours in the future. Teach others so that others can teach ours in the future.

Finally, let me end this journey in the same way that we had started it years ago (what seems to feel a long time by now) – by thanking you for believing in the whole enterprise and by apologising for being ultimately a human being.

I thank you for the sacrifices of time that you have made, leaving your wives and children (especially on the eve of her birthday leaving for a game at 1 am!) to cheer for a group of boys whom wouldn’t even remember your face the next time you turned up.

Thank you to the wives – I do not need to mention names here because we go by heart by now – for understanding that your husbands have to do this at this stage; that they need to reconnect with things beyond the daily confine of a family life in order not to lose touch with the bigger picture of life. Thank you for looking after the children while they were happily having fun (ha ha!) or for cheering for the team, making it feel homely as one big family.

I apologise for my transgression, harsh words and impatience – it’s a mark of how close we are that I know you would take all of them in good faith knowing I have little time for anything that I touch.

Sorry for my hot-headedness, thinking that I know best for everything and I have the final call for anything – when in reality the Mighty Ducks Project shall remain a figment of our imagination without the collective efforts of everyone.

Thank you to everyone from the Class of 94 who never fail to give a ringgit or two to lift our financial burden, although you don’t have much to begin with. Thank you for taking pride in the boys as much as we had. Thank you for the cheering and support as we follow the boys as a groupie from one tournament to another.

Thank you to the ex-hockey players from various batches (in particular from the Class of 92 and Class of 96), who had provided great support throughout the years and willingly travelled to Kuala Kangsar to become sparring partners for the boys.

Thank you to a few individuals (whose names I won’t put here) who drew inspiration from the whole Mighty Ducks journey and contributed financially to the efforts, though they are unrelated whatsoever to MCKK.

Lastly, thank you to 3 great individuals whose magnanimity and big heart beat all of us – for in their sincerity we see value in the whole project; from their kindness we drew strength to finish it.

Thank you to Mr Thaman Singh, Mr N Jeyapala and Mr Thorsten Heidelberg who showed us that kindness knows no boundary, colour, religion or place. What a fate that of all the things in the world, we were brought together by a struggling hockey team in a small place called Kuala Kangsar.

We can’t see into the future, but I for one know that I come out of the whole experience more level-headed and mellow as a person. I am sure as much as we have touched the boys’ lives they too have touched ours in various positive ways.

Thank you for believing – may the spirit of giving is alive on the hockey pitch of MCKK for many years to come. Rain or shine, the show must go on.

FOOTNOTE

Don’t Stop Believing is a natural choice no matter how corny it is. Besides, it relates better to their generation (ha ha ha).

I was actually quite impressed with the cheering considering we had to compete with the jeering STAR boys ha ha. We attracted more attention with the girls compared to the game (who snapped a few pictures or two), unfortunately much to Chibiok’s frustration they were all underage.
